What is the ‘sustainability appraisal’ of the Plan?

Government guidance requires local authorities to check that their plans are sustainable by undertaking a ‘sustainability appraisal’. It involves testing the Plan against an agreed set of economic, social and environmental criteria throughout the preparation process.

The sustainability appraisal of the North London Waste Plan has been informed by a panel of local stakeholders. The panel helped check all aspects of the plan against sustainability goals, such as:

  • increasing energy efficiency
  • reducing transport requirements
  • minimising noise and nuisance

To ensure that recommendations from the sustainability appraisal are taken into account, the appraisal will be an ongoing process and an integral part of the development of the Plan.

Documents from the sustainability appraisal process have been issued on the Documents page.

More general background on sustainability appraisal can be found in the report: Sustainability Appraisal of Regional Spatial Strategies and Local Development Documents.
